Often known as the transition into spring, March is also known as the beginning of women's history month. March is a time dedicated to recognizing the achievements, struggles, and contributions from women throughout history! March is more than just a celebration, it is a reminder of the progress made to fight for gender-equality and give women a platform for greatness. Tracing back to March 8th, marked as international women's day, the movement gained traction in the 1970s. In 1987, Congress officially declared March as women's history month, further emphasizing the month's importance.
Throughout history, millions of women have served honorable roles but their stories have gone unrecognized. Today we honor several women who have paved the way for younger generations of women. Most notably, we honor trailblazers: Susan B. Anthony (key figure in the women's suffrage movement), Harriet Tubman (Abolitionist and activist), Sojourner Truth (Abolitionist and activist), Rosa Parks (Civil Rights activist), Indira Gandhi (The first female prime minister of India), Marie Curie (Pioneering physicist and chemist, first woman to win a Nobel Prize), Katherine Johnson (A mathematician whose calculations helped in NASA's early space missions), Jane Goodall (Anthropologist, known for her work with chimpanzees), Maya Angelou (Renowned poet, author, and Civil Rights activist), Frida Kahlo (Iconic Mexican painter), Malala (Activist for female education and youngest Nobel prize honoree), Amelia Earhart (Aviation pioneer, the first woman to fly alone across the Atlantic ocean).
The women who have paved the way and spread change for good are not limited to a list. Women creating a change can be found anywhere, in any community, whether their help is big or small. The women above are honored for their contributions, but are certainly not the limit to the greatness that women's history has known.
